Making Your Safety A Priority

As a union representative, there are a number of issues that must be addressed every day. Implementation of the contract, future business, wages and benefits and supporting legislation that benefits workers. However, the most important part of a union representative’s job is a safe workplace. Going home in the condition in which you arrive to work each day is our first priority.

UAW contracts exceed OSHA regulations, protecting our members and setting the standard for all workers. While we take pride in the health and safety improvements we have accomplished, we can never rest on our laurels. As our workplaces evolve, we must continue to identify and address workplace hazards.

Health and safety improvements don’t make headlines, but they matter to our members. There are systems in place to protect our members. Health and Safety representatives in our workplaces are there to ensure hazards are addressed. We all need to watch out for our Sisters and Brothers by reporting potential hazards to your health and safety representative.

Each of us have someone at home depending on us. I will continue to push for health and safety standards that protect our members on the job. I believe in increasing training for those responsible for your safety, processes that are safe to perform and workplaces that place your safety first. Your safety should always be job one.
