Protecting All Sectors

In the UAW, it is our diversity that makes us strong. All sectors work together to truly make us a “Union (for) all workers.” Each member is important, each workplace and each local union. While major manufacturing garners more headlines, the members in all sectors are just as important.

Our TOP (Technical Office & Professional) sector includes workers for the State of Michigan, county and municipal employees, engineers, health care workers, insurance industry workers, and many other technical and office professions.​

For the past four years, I have had the pleasure of representing our members in the gaming sector. This sector is growing, and we must build density in that industry to give us more power in bargaining.

Our Education sector represents over 100,000 educational staff, faculty, student workers, researchers and postdoc workers across the United States. This sector is growing steadily and a lot of opportunities remain there.

Our Competitive Shop/ Independents, Parts and Supplier Department represents thousands of workers across supply chains for heavy manufacturing. There is a lot of potential for growth in this sector as well, as we have intensified our organizing efforts in this sector.

Each of these sectors deserve livable wages, adequate benefits and security in their job. We have to defend and expand our footprint in these sectors. The greater our density, the stronger our bargaining power. Each member of the International Executive Board has to defend all sectors whether they represent those units or not. While we celebrate and support our diversity across the sectors, at the end of the day we are one union, one movement and one family.
